We've all heard about tumblr right? LOL. If nothing else, I do hope this means more people (especially those I already know and like from there!) consider joining dreamwidth. It'd be a good outcome. And even if they end up reverting the update (I'm not holding my breath) I still want to use this journal more. At the moment I'm crossposting old fics here every two days, so in the meantime, I hope I'll keep the momentum and post other things on days in-between. Today, I thought I'd start with telling you guys about some of the things I've been reading and watching lately (a lot of them last week, because I got sick and I took shameless advantage of that).
  • [personal profile] tellshannon815 mentioned "56 Days" by Catherine Ryan Howard in a recent-ish post. A few days later I finished it LOL. As of now I've read three more thrillers by this author ("The Trap", "The Liar's Girl", and "The Nothing Man"). With some nitpicks here and there, I've really enjoyed them, especially the last one. The author is really good at landing twists and her character work is quite good. I really appreciate how interesting I find her female characters, and her voice when she's writing from the POVs of the killers is particularly perturbing in its every-day realism.
  • I also read a few comics. Caught up with Absolute Wonder Woman (it's fine, but at the moment I think my interest has waned, sadly), and I read Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees: Rite of Spring (with the original comic, I loved #1 and thought the last issue landed really well, even if the middle wasn't as good. With this one, I think what failed to landed properly is the ending, but I really enjoyed the rest) and The Night Eaters, the other comic by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda. I definitely recommend that one, it's a very engaging and inspiring read.
  • Although these will be long-term projects LOL, I've finally gotten around to start both the Vorkosigan saga and the Earthsea cycle. In the latter case I've only read "The Word of Unbinding" and "The Rule of Names", two sort stories that ~planted seeds for what the larger series would be, but I hope to start the first novel... soon-ish (I own the complete illustrated collection, which is very pretty and all, but not something you can carry around without breaking your back xD, and next week I might have to travel). Meanwhile, I did read "Shards of Honor", and loved it. I found the couple really charming in their absolutely charmless way LOL, and the book did a really good job convincing me that they were the perfect partner for each other and that Cordelia made the right choice when [redacted].
  • After my third attempt, I completed the Psych series, films included (minus additional material I have no interest in). It's a really fun romp with lovable characters, and I really appreciate that the lead couple made the choice to be childfree. For now, at least, I don't trust tv writers on this lol. Which is why I wouldn't be at all heartbroken if there were no more movies, tbqh.
  • There are many other shows I should've caught up with instead, but alas. Right now, other than the above, I'm only watching the weekly episodes of Grey's Anatomy and The Pitt. I have little to say about the first one (and might stop watching it until the season is over and I have time to catch up), and plenty about the latter LOL, though most of that I've reserved it for conversations with other people on tumblr. The second season hasn't been as good as the first, and unfortunately I think a lot of it is how much Collins's absence is felt: without her, the female characters as a whole feel unmoored, while she connected them all. The show's misogynistic and racist biases pop up more, in ways that can't be attributed to "characters showing flaws." But a lot of it continues to be really engaging, and I am more and more interested in the female characters week after week. I wish I could know everything about them LOL, but I'll be content with the crumbs this format allows!! Santos continues to be my dearest darling, but I'm also really enjoying others like Al-Hashimi or Javadi or García. Or Mohan, though her storyline has left a lot to be desired.
And now, for an ask game:

GIVE A CHARACTER

and I’ll break their ass down:
  • How I feel about this character
  • All the people I ship romantically with this character
  • My non-romantic OTP for this character
  • My unpopular opinion about this character
  • One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

A bit later in the day but I remembered this time añdlsfj.

Title: bloodless.
Fandom: Monstress.
Pairing: Maika Halfwolf/Tuya.
Summary: written for the prompt: "any, any, i may think of you softly from time to time but i'll cut off my hand before i ever reach for you again" in the Three Sentence Ficathon.
Word count: 100.

-

The wool fell off Maika's eyes long ago; she knew Tuya intimately, the way you're bound to when someone cracked open your chest cavity and burrowed a place for themselves within your very bones, blood, and viscera.

Their moves would have an echo, a ripple effect, in your body (in your life); betrayal became an old ache, disappointment a shadow that had long followed her from a tender age. The wounds they left scabbed over, scarred; but for Maika, herself no longer so tender, duplicity grew tedious, predictable, wearying —no longer remarkable, or worth the hurt; let alone the absolution.
queenslayerbee: Encarna covers her head partially with a veil, dressed in black, to offer a poisoned apple to Blancanieves after she’s finished in the bull ring. Everything in the image is in black and white, like in the film, but everything except encarna is blurred, and the apple looks crimson red. (encarna (blancanieves))

Here are the drabbles I wrote for the second post of the 3SF.

-Monstress, Maika/Tuya, "bloodless" (any, any, i may think of you softly from time to time but i'll cut off my hand before i ever reach for you again). dreamwidth link + ao3 link.

-The 100, Clarke/Josephine, "pillage" (Any, any, who left the blue veins of your throat unkissed?). dreamwidth link + ao3 link.

-DC comics, Mia Dearden, "better than being the prey" (Any, Any, Heart of a hunter). dreamwidth link + ao3 link.

-DC comics, Tara Markov, "hearsay" (Teen Titans (Any Media Type), Tara Markov, and they’d all be so disappointed / ‘cause who am I, if not exploited?). dreamwidth link + ao3 link.

While not for the 3SF, I've also written a triple drabble, bat-man and robins, featuring Dustin & Steve from Stranger Things ft. some talk about DC characters. Because why not mix two current interests.

Also these are the prompts I left, in case they inspire anyone :P

I got this week's rec list ready early, to my surprise! So here it is

DCU

FANFIC

  • Two Minutes by Aingeal98. 1.9k, T. Cass does something terrible for Steph. Heartbreaking and perfectly in character.
  • mindscape by torigates. 2k, T. This one is set in the Young Justice cartoon, instead of the comics, like the rest. It's immediately set post-Failsafe (thee episode from season 1), and focuses on Supermartian. I read it way back when, as a lurker, and on reread it got me all nostalgic.
  • Aftermathmares by Mist-managed (Greyspaces13). 3k, T. Mia's survivor's guilt after Lian's death in Cry For Justice. I liked seeing a fic that sits with this moment in time for the Arrowfam (mainly Mia and Oliver only, here). It's difficult, and it certainly wasn't well-written in canon, but I do think there could be a lot to explore with it.
  • In Which Jason Goes to a Convention by TeleportingAspen. 3.3k, T. What if Jade Nguyen was Jason's poison trainer? The fic expands across Lost Days and post-UTRH, and it's a satisfying portrayal of his character during the time.
  • Oracle, Re: Birth by KamalasFanfiction. 8.1k, T. This fic mixes preboot and reboot canon in a very interesting way: what if the Batgirl of Burnside was an impostor, and oracle!Barbara had to deal with that? If you're like me and still kind of bitter about the reboot, and especially on what it did to her character, go ahead and read this.
  • Left Behind, Or Forgotten by cleromancy. 30.8k, T. This one is marked incomplete, but it ends at a good, narratively satisfying point so don't let that deter you. Features the bat clan a few years down the line (pre-reboot continuity, of course), with their complex dynamics, The Bruce Problem... it has background Jaytim and Dickroy, too, and a lot of humour mixed with The Horrors. I'd also recommend reading the three vignettes preceding it in the series, but I personally read them after reading the longer, more plot-relevant LBOF, and I think it's preferable that way.

Recs every day for this event would've been a little too much for me, so instead, I decided to put together a bit of a larger list, mixing some of the most prevalent fandoms I'm currently into + some miscellaneous recs for everyone ^-^

THE MURDERBOT DIARIES

I just read this series in October (in about a week...) and already I've gotten a glimpse to a pretty creative fandom.

  • la petite mort by howlingmoonrise (TheDarkStoryteller). 3.8k, T. This is a Barbie/Dracula crossover (and a Barbie/Dracula romance) and I urge you to read it. AMAZING fic, I swear.
  • Nomon by interlude. 6.4, T. Fic set in the time jump between season 4 and season 5 of The 100, focused on Bellamy/Echo and the Space Kru. The premise is basically, what if Echo got pregnant? I'm not one for pregnancy stories unless they fit specific criteria, but this one definitely passes the test.
  • Lamb to the Slaughter by angelfishofthelord. 85k, G (... I would not agree with this rating LOL). If you like whump, this fic has it in spades. It's a Supernatural what-if of that episode in s14 where John appears, Because. What if instead of Castiel losing his memories, the Winchesters did? And they encountered a strange creature in their bunker that they do not remember... Featuring Castiel being put through the ringer + a badass Mary Winchester.

queenslayerbee: Isabelle Adjany as Lucy Harker in 1979's "Nosferatu the Vampire". She's surrounded by darkness, looking over her shoulder while she wears a white nightgown and a cross as a necklace. A hand with long nails like a claw is reaching for her neck from the darkness behind her. (batcat (batman returns))
Three book covers. -"The Sign of Four" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Red background, and a black silouette of a syringe, pointing up and spilling floating liquid, at the centre. -DC Universe. "Inheritance", Devin Grayson. The cover shows Batman, Green Arrow, and Aquaman, in that order, in battling stances. -"Lolita", by Vladimir Nabokov. The cover shows the drawing of a little girl, with only part of her torso and face visible. She wears a green dresses with small orange flowers, and there is a man's hand wrapped possessively around her shoulder.
Three comic book covers. -Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees. IDW comics. The cover shows an anthropomorphic bear in a clearing in the woods, as seen from above. She has a shovel in one hand and is carrying a large sack that's soaked with blood in the other. -Free Comic Book Day. Barda, by Ngozi Ukazu. The cover shows Big Barda, from DC comics, with her armor and red cape, in a fighting stance, staring straight ahead with determination. -Catwoman (1989) by Mindy Newel. "In the Ruins of Innocence, the Batman's Enemy is Born..." The cover shows Catwoman in a black suit, with wishkers; she looks angry, reading her claws. Near the bottom there's a small image of Selina, thrown on the floor with a tattered short dress, black tighs and red heels.
Three comic book covers. -The Bat-Man: First Knight. The silouette of Batman, with larger than usual ears, stsares down ahead. Inside it there are drawings of a mid 20th century car, a woman in a dress, a mounstrous-looking man, and another one pointing a gun ahead. -Robin: The Girl Wonder. Part of, or prequel, to the War Games arc. The cover shows Batman and Stephanie dressed as Robin, in fighting stances. -Outsiders (2003). "Nightwing and the Red Hood... side by side?" The cover, from issue 44, shows Nightwing crouching and Red Hood behind him, pointing a gun ahead.

BOOKS

  • The Sign of Four by Arthur Conan Doyle. This one introduces Mary. I wish she'd gotten the treasure and become a rich heiress 😢
  • Inheritance by Devin Grayson. Loved it. I'm definitely gonna track down her other prose novels. I made a good guess on who [redacted] from very early in the book, practically from the first, and it was still quite gripping. The funniest thing, however, is how unequal each of the former sidekicks' sections are lol. Was she just going through the motions with Garth? Although, by virtue of being the one I know the least about, it did make me want to read his comics. Roy's and Dick's were more even, both with incredibly poignant, poetic flashbacks I adored, but you can tell DickAndBruce is where her heart is and their dynamic was showcased beautifully imo. Her characterization of Ollie is... surely controversial, and doesn't quite match how I see the guy, but it didn't bother me.
  • Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. This one is a reread, though it's been a decade since I read it for the first time. I've read it even more slowly than the first time around, pondering over practically every passage. Nabokov's prose is simply sublime, and Dolores's character is one of those that stays with you for how much you read into her.

COMICS

  • Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees. The first issue enchanted me, and the last one was a very apt ending for the story. The journey to get there let me down.
  • FCBD 2024: Barda Special Edition. This is a preview for an upcoming story. A young Barda is charged to break the prisoner Scott Free, as the beginning of their romance. Theirs is a ship I've been curious about for a while, and I really dig the premise, so I can't wait to read it.
  • Catwoman: Her Sister's Keeper. A short, gritty origin story that builds on the Selina we see in Batman: Year One, written by the same author as Lois Lane (1986). I really wish her sister was more present in Catwoman's story in general, tbh. She was featured in Selina's Knight Terror mini, which I might end up rereading.
  • The Bat-Man: First Knight. Three-part run set in the 40s, the original Batman setting. A tale of monsters, human experimentation, and the effects of the second world war. I enjoyed it, though not wildly, but it confirms I'd enjoy more historical settings in my comics.
  • War Games. Oh boy. OH BOY. My kill list grew with each page I read. The missed shot at a proper story with robin!Steph, the incredibly uncharitable way she's written... all to end in the grossest example of character assassination I've ever seen with Dr Leslie Thompkins, all to relieve Bruce of his guilt for his part in Steph's demise. I wanted to read the arc because I thought it was important for some Steph-focused storylines I want to write that build up on it (mostly by subverting or contradict him), but with few exceptions (SOME of Steph's Robin arc, the school plot, Tarantula's appearances, and the parts touching on Dick's downward spiral, for example) it was all so hateful and mean-spirited. Even the prelude to the proper arc, starting with Bruce and Cass's visit to Jason grave to use him as a cautionary tale against Steph, or that storyline about the teen mothers... death. Death to Dan DiDio for one thousand years.
  • Outsiders (2003). I'm including the Teen Titans crossover arcs (including both Secret Files and Origins issues, both GREAT), and the Outsiders: Five of a Kind arc where Batman is a shit xD (it also did make me wanna read the continuation in the next Batman and the Outsiders run). The art was... Mixed, by which I mean that sometimes it was fuck-ugly lol, but I loved the run. Winick gets me. I have a special place in my heart for Jason's little arc, OBVIOUSLY, but my favourite parts are, second, Dick's arc, and first, ANISSA AND GRACE. I as a lesbian owe Winick much for that one. They're the main attraction for the continuation, ngl. I also loved Shift and Indigo, btw. So damn tragic 🥲

WHAT I JUST FINISHED READING

I finished Tony Kusher's "Angels in America". What a bonkers, delightful play. I'd love to watch it live.

I also read the first two runs of Young Justic comics related to the show as I complete my rewatch. Not much to report there, except that I still consider this world's version of Dick/Barbara unforgivably boring.

WHAT I'M READING NOW

I'm still following a few ongoing comic runs: Batman: Wayne Family Adventures, Harley Quinn: Black + White + Redder, JRed Hood: Outlaws, Spirit World, Tales of The Titans, The Invincible Iron Man (the Annual was BAD), Waller vs. Wildstorm... I also started "The Cull", a 5-issues long miniseries from Image Comics that intrigued me with its first issue.

Most importantly, I caught up with "Monstress". This comic canNOT be overrated, I swear. I'm enjoying it so, so much. For a little while one of the main character annoyed me to unspeakable lengths; she's supposed to represent ~~hope in the darkest moments and she felt more like a device, and a poorly used one at that, than a character in her own right, but in the last few volumes her writing has improved vastly. She feels more real, more integrated with the rest of the story. And I'm not quite caught up with "Saga", but soon... soon.

ETA: today I got to read the last issue of the Iron Man run and

tiny spoiler )tiny spoiler )tiny spoiler )

Lol. Lmao even.

WHAT I'LL READ NEXT

When I finish beta-reading my friend's novel, I want to pick up James Goldman's "The Lion in Winter" and Catherynne M. Valente's "The Refrigerator Monologues". And, of course. More comics. I've been eyeing yet another ongoing run called "Dark Knights of Steel".

queenslayerbee: Isabelle Adjany as Lucy Harker in 1979's "Nosferatu the Vampire". She's surrounded by darkness, looking over her shoulder while she wears a white nightgown and a cross as a necklace. A hand with long nails like a claw is reaching for her neck from the darkness behind her. (Default)
Just felt like doing one of these again!

-ONE SHOW: as I return to my DCU roots, I decided to rewatch & complete "YOUNG JUSTICE" this month, as I never watched the fourth, and for now last, season. I finished the first a few days ago; it is, without a doubt, the best one, and the one I'd recommend without caveats. Quite a few of the show's choices have frustrated me since season 2 and especially season 3 (which committed the cardinal sin of being largely... boring). But it still offers a lot that interests me, and that first season... that first season is impecable and I do recommend it wholeheartedly. Especially if you want to work on building believable, organic group dynamics for your characters; I consider it quite a good reference for one of my original WIPs, in that sense.

-ONE ESSAY: "YOU GET THOUGH. YOU GET EVEN: RAPE, ANGER, CYNICISM, AND THE VIGILANTE GIRL DETECTIVE IN VERONICA MARS" by Alaine Martaus. Quite an interesting piece on one of the best protagonists of our era, IMO. It's barely 10 pages long, all in all, and it's available here in academia(.)edu, where you can make a free acount.

-ONE COMIC BOOK: now that I'm reading other Image titles, I'm thinking back to "PAPER GIRLS", one of my faovurite comics. It's a mystery/sci-fi series following the story of four 12yo newspaper delivery girls from the 80s and their time travel mishaps. It ended a few years ago, with 30 issues total. Amazon started an adaptation, and it was quite good, promising to faithfully adapt the comic's spirit while deviating from it in interesting ways... and ofc it was cancelled right after the first season xDD. But the comic itself is more than worth it!

queenslayerbee: Lisa simpson dressed in a multicoloured baggy shirt, with a sideways cap and sunglasses, and a disaffected look on her face. (lisa simpson (the simpsons))
WHAT I JUST FINISHED READING

I decided to dip my toe in a couple Marvel runs and finished the limited series "I Am Iron Man". It's... weird LOL. More conceptual than plot. I liked the last two issues the most, because they offered two things I love in my Tony Stark comics: Tony being a paranoid POS who implements preventative measures against friends & allies (thus alienating them), and Tony messing with science in really fun, fucked up ways that inspire fun, fucked up sci-fi ideas in me.

I also finished "Harley Quinn: Black + White + Red" (and started the first issue of its sequel). My favourite remains the first chapter (I need to read the author's Harleen series), but all of the rest were pretty fun. And the sequel comic had a few really fun stories, my favourites being the first two ones because they include, respectively, spoiler )

WHAT I'M READING NOW

Other than continuing what I already listed in the last entry, I've caught up with a few runs! Namely "Batman: Wayne Family Adventures" (often too fluffy and preachy for my tastes, but with cute art and interesting plotbunnies), "The Invincible Iron Man" (a possibly... good... Iron Man run?? Whitewashing -in the moral sense- Howard Stark aside rme), and "Red Hood: Outlaws". I wasn't all that sure about that last one at first, but I stuck with it because of the pretty art and because of my love for Jason Todd LOL. But around issues 20-30 there's certain reveal/twist I won't spoil that changed things for me; it's REALLY interesting, basically. I will say that, personally, I think the Bruce in this comic deserves to be punted into the sun by the main trio xD

I've also worked on catching up with two ongoing runs that have been on my radar for a long time, from Image Comics. First, "Saga", which I actually started some years ago, although I can't remember how far I got. I love it; the characters, the framework, the plot, its willingness to show true horrors... A+. The other run is "Monstress", and let me tell you, it was love at first sight. Deliciously grimdark? Check. Tons of female characters doing fucked up, horrid shit? Check. Prospective femslash pairings that are actually interesting and complex? Check! All paired with a gorgeous, gorgeous, whimsical drawing style.

I also caught up with the few comics of interest that came out this week. Nothing much to report there, except that unfortunately "Knight Terrors: Robin #2" comes with a side of that Jason (and Tim!) fanon characterisation that irks me so much xD

And book wise, I've picked up "Angels in America" right where I left off. Which was a little after this gut-wrenching quote (amidst a yet more painful scene):

PRIOR: We have reached a verdict, your honor. This man's heart is deficient. He loves, but his love is worth nothing.

WHAT I'LL READ NEXT

I only intend to keep up with *waves hands* all of that.

.... and probably some more comics smh.
