I got this week's rec list ready early, to my surprise! So here it is

DCU

FANFIC

  • Two Minutes by Aingeal98. 1.9k, T. Cass does something terrible for Steph. Heartbreaking and perfectly in character.
  • mindscape by torigates. 2k, T. This one is set in the Young Justice cartoon, instead of the comics, like the rest. It's immediately set post-Failsafe (thee episode from season 1), and focuses on Supermartian. I read it way back when, as a lurker, and on reread it got me all nostalgic.
  • Aftermathmares by Mist-managed (Greyspaces13). 3k, T. Mia's survivor's guilt after Lian's death in Cry For Justice. I liked seeing a fic that sits with this moment in time for the Arrowfam (mainly Mia and Oliver only, here). It's difficult, and it certainly wasn't well-written in canon, but I do think there could be a lot to explore with it.
  • In Which Jason Goes to a Convention by TeleportingAspen. 3.3k, T. What if Jade Nguyen was Jason's poison trainer? The fic expands across Lost Days and post-UTRH, and it's a satisfying portrayal of his character during the time.
  • Oracle, Re: Birth by KamalasFanfiction. 8.1k, T. This fic mixes preboot and reboot canon in a very interesting way: what if the Batgirl of Burnside was an impostor, and oracle!Barbara had to deal with that? If you're like me and still kind of bitter about the reboot, and especially on what it did to her character, go ahead and read this.
  • Left Behind, Or Forgotten by cleromancy. 30.8k, T. This one is marked incomplete, but it ends at a good, narratively satisfying point so don't let that deter you. Features the bat clan a few years down the line (pre-reboot continuity, of course), with their complex dynamics, The Bruce Problem... it has background Jaytim and Dickroy, too, and a lot of humour mixed with The Horrors. I'd also recommend reading the three vignettes preceding it in the series, but I personally read them after reading the longer, more plot-relevant LBOF, and I think it's preferable that way.

Today, is Ninth House time.

Headsup: a lot of the fics in today's list require an ao3 account to be read.

FANFIC

  • varsouviana by cristabeloct. 1.6k, T. A short, pre-lyctorhood Cytherea/Loveday fic. Mandatory if you want to read some REALLY good pining.
  • and they were roommates by HerenorThereNearnorFar. 2.7k, T. Pre-Apocalypse (I) Mercymorn/Cristabel that does a great job of exploring who their characters could've been. I love Mercy's righteous fury, in particular.
  • settle up in heaven by liesmyth. 3k, T. Some Kiriona/Harrow corpse action. A+ stuff.
  • Incident Report by notheragain. 4.5, E. Pre-series Corona/Judith. It's described as "Judith files an official report to admit to Cohort Intelligence that she, despite all her best efforts, got laid." and it is exactly what that should be.
  • we're kings among runaways (on the bus mall) by NotAFicWriter. 11.2k, T. Also known as the Abortion Fic (there should be more abortion fics!!). I'm not usually into modern AUs, but every once in a while there are some that are undeniably absolute gems. Gideon's voice in particular is perfect here.
  • as long as it is day by liesmyth. 18.3k, T. Time-loop fic!! Set right near the end of HtN!!! With a great Gideon and great Gideon-John and Gideon-Wake scenes!!! The WORST family reunion ever, indeed. And an incredible read.

  • Anthropology by Riona. 3.2k, T. A conversation between Mark and Helena written after 2x04 of Severance aired.
  • The Blues Run the Game by coyotesuspect. 7,4k, M. Post-canon Hustlers fic that dives into what the immediate aftermath of the article could've been like for Destiny. And gives some much needed joy to her and Ramona.

I gave myself a prompt challenge back in January, during the Snowflake event over Dreamwidth, and finally completed and posted them \o/

This week I devoured Harrow the Ninth and absolutely loved it. I liked the first book, but this novel took the series to another level. I quite enjoyed getting to read something a little different, and piecing together the answers by the information that slowly trickled chapter after chapter. I want to read something else in between this and the third installment, but I can't wait to read that one. I look forward to catching up and finally being able to look at what my TLT mutuals have been saying without fearing getting myself spoioled LOL.

I also read a few short stories by the same author: Chew and The Woman in the Hill, two independent stories both available in Nightmare Magazine, and The Mysterious Study of Doctor Sex, set in TLT universe, a little tale of an adventure Camilla and Palmedes have as teens that shows a bit of how the Sixth House works.

What I've picked for the in-between of TLT was a reread of The Clan of the Cave Bear. There's a good chance I might only read that first book, but who knows. Maybe this time around I finish the saga. I think I made it to the beginning of the 5th book, back when I first picked them as a preteen.

And I've started Yellowface, which has been on my TBR for a while. R. F. Kuang seems to be a hit-or-miss for people, as an author, but that first chapter and the narrator's voice hooked me immediately. I'm not surprised, because a friend of mine read it over a year ago and shared some quotes that felt very, very promising.

On the non-fiction side of things, I finished The Feminist Killjoy Handbook by Sara Ahmed, which I wholeheartedly recommend. I also read a few hand-picked essay chapters from larger books: Hélène Cixoux's "Coming to Writing", which will merit a second, more paused read to digest every bit, and Tricia Lootens's "Whose Hand Was I Holding?: Familial and Sexual Politics in Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House"

Comics-wise, there's not much to tell. I continue to enjoy Absolute Wonder Woman. I'm keeping up with Iron Man and the West Coast Avengers runs; they're better than most Tony runs of the recent past LOL, but I might only give them a few more issues to impress me. And I'll probably stop reading Wayne Family Adventures until the arc is over, at least, because the last few issues have done little more than aggravate me, and I have a firm "if it sucks, hit da bricks" philosophy with comic books.

WHAT I JUST FINISHED READING

I finished Tony Kusher's "Angels in America". What a bonkers, delightful play. I'd love to watch it live.

I also read the first two runs of Young Justic comics related to the show as I complete my rewatch. Not much to report there, except that I still consider this world's version of Dick/Barbara unforgivably boring.

WHAT I'M READING NOW

I'm still following a few ongoing comic runs: Batman: Wayne Family Adventures, Harley Quinn: Black + White + Redder, JRed Hood: Outlaws, Spirit World, Tales of The Titans, The Invincible Iron Man (the Annual was BAD), Waller vs. Wildstorm... I also started "The Cull", a 5-issues long miniseries from Image Comics that intrigued me with its first issue.

Most importantly, I caught up with "Monstress". This comic canNOT be overrated, I swear. I'm enjoying it so, so much. For a little while one of the main character annoyed me to unspeakable lengths; she's supposed to represent ~~hope in the darkest moments and she felt more like a device, and a poorly used one at that, than a character in her own right, but in the last few volumes her writing has improved vastly. She feels more real, more integrated with the rest of the story. And I'm not quite caught up with "Saga", but soon... soon.

ETA: today I got to read the last issue of the Iron Man run and

tiny spoiler )tiny spoiler )tiny spoiler )

Lol. Lmao even.

WHAT I'LL READ NEXT

When I finish beta-reading my friend's novel, I want to pick up James Goldman's "The Lion in Winter" and Catherynne M. Valente's "The Refrigerator Monologues". And, of course. More comics. I've been eyeing yet another ongoing run called "Dark Knights of Steel".

WHAT I JUST FINISHED READING

I decided to dip my toe in a couple Marvel runs and finished the limited series "I Am Iron Man". It's... weird LOL. More conceptual than plot. I liked the last two issues the most, because they offered two things I love in my Tony Stark comics: Tony being a paranoid POS who implements preventative measures against friends & allies (thus alienating them), and Tony messing with science in really fun, fucked up ways that inspire fun, fucked up sci-fi ideas in me.

I also finished "Harley Quinn: Black + White + Red" (and started the first issue of its sequel). My favourite remains the first chapter (I need to read the author's Harleen series), but all of the rest were pretty fun. And the sequel comic had a few really fun stories, my favourites being the first two ones because they include, respectively, spoiler )

WHAT I'M READING NOW

Other than continuing what I already listed in the last entry, I've caught up with a few runs! Namely "Batman: Wayne Family Adventures" (often too fluffy and preachy for my tastes, but with cute art and interesting plotbunnies), "The Invincible Iron Man" (a possibly... good... Iron Man run?? Whitewashing -in the moral sense- Howard Stark aside rme), and "Red Hood: Outlaws". I wasn't all that sure about that last one at first, but I stuck with it because of the pretty art and because of my love for Jason Todd LOL. But around issues 20-30 there's certain reveal/twist I won't spoil that changed things for me; it's REALLY interesting, basically. I will say that, personally, I think the Bruce in this comic deserves to be punted into the sun by the main trio xD

I've also worked on catching up with two ongoing runs that have been on my radar for a long time, from Image Comics. First, "Saga", which I actually started some years ago, although I can't remember how far I got. I love it; the characters, the framework, the plot, its willingness to show true horrors... A+. The other run is "Monstress", and let me tell you, it was love at first sight. Deliciously grimdark? Check. Tons of female characters doing fucked up, horrid shit? Check. Prospective femslash pairings that are actually interesting and complex? Check! All paired with a gorgeous, gorgeous, whimsical drawing style.

I also caught up with the few comics of interest that came out this week. Nothing much to report there, except that unfortunately "Knight Terrors: Robin #2" comes with a side of that Jason (and Tim!) fanon characterisation that irks me so much xD

And book wise, I've picked up "Angels in America" right where I left off. Which was a little after this gut-wrenching quote (amidst a yet more painful scene):

PRIOR: We have reached a verdict, your honor. This man's heart is deficient. He loves, but his love is worth nothing.

WHAT I'LL READ NEXT

I only intend to keep up with *waves hands* all of that.

.... and probably some more comics smh.
