Create a wish list of fandom things (podfic, graphics, playlists, canon recs translations, research help, vids, sky's the limit!) that you'd like to receive. Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

  • I would definitely welcome sites where you can get information to help with research. Specially scientifical/medical information (a lot of complicated injuries and injury complications will be making an appearance in upcoming fic lol.
  • Generally, any good resource for writers you think is useful! You never know.
  • Book recs! I like adult lit, and welcome any genre, but tend to go for fantasy and sci-fi, preferably centered on women, and ideally writing by non-british, non-north american authors (just for variety!). Oh, and any good non-fiction you might have read recently! I favour philosophy/world history and autobiographies by interesting historical women, but I'd read anything that catches my eye.
  • And why not, fic recs! You can look at my sticky post for my fandoms, but I'm particularly in the mood for dc comics (especially Jason-related, but some other favourite characters of mine are Talia, Dick, Kara, Selina, or Diana), the buffyverse (Buffy, Lilah/Wesley, Faith, Angel, Willow, Giles), the plecverse (Caroline, Bonnie, Elena), or, weirdly, because it's not really one of my fandoms, ASOIAF (ANYTHING for the female characters that focuses on their damn selves and/or dynamics between them and ignores the guys pls... Cersei, Catelyn, Brienne, Daenerys, Arya, Shae, Sansa...). At the moment I'm interested in long, plotty fics; gen or shippy, although I know I'd be extra nitpicky about the latter class lol.
Thank you in advance ^-^

okay i cannot find the doc for the life of me, but! i am fairly easily summarize.

essentially there are 5 iterations in supergirl comics. first you've got pre-crisis. this was the first version of supergirl to show up in action comics back in '59. this was kara zor-el, superman's cousin from krypton. she was around until crisis on infinite earths where she was killed, and then the dcu was soft rebooted in some places.

in amidst all of that, power girl was introduced. she's kara zor-l from earth-2, an alternate universe version of supergirl. she's changed a bit as dc has gone through various reboots but never been completely overhauled the way supergirl has been.

after crisis on infinite earths, the next supergirl was matrix. matrix was a genetically modified shape-shifting bit of protoplasm created by lex luthor. (and this was somehow less convoluted than kara's backstory, apparently 🙄) she eventually breaks away from luthor and lives with the kents as mae kent. later she meets a young woman named linda danvers and essentially merges with her to save her life and linda becomes supergirl. this is the peter david supergirl run in the '90s. it... sure is a thing. but basically if supergirl is wearing a white cropped t-shirt in the comics, it's linda danvers.

in '05, they brought kara back. she fell to earth with a bunch of kryptonite, was trained by clark, bruce, and diana, and eventually became a hero in her own right. this is the version of her with the long-sleeved crop top and miniskirt. (and my favorite version of her, actually!) she had a bit of a rough beginning with the way some of her comics were written, but her solo book gets really good, especially once you get to sterling gates' run.

then dc decided to reboot! they completely reintroduced kara in the new 52 and yet again erased her history, starting her from scratch. when rebirth came around they changed some of her story yet again to make it mesh better with the tv show, though that version of kara was 16, not an adult. but she went by "linda danvers" because of her adoptive parents in this iteration.

currently i have no idea what they're doing with her. "whatever they feel like at the moment" seems to be the most accurate answer? but it's very confusing.

tl;dr: if the comic is from between '59 and '85, it's pre-crisis kara. if she's got a boob window, it's power girl. if it's from '89 to the early aughts and/or the supergirl has a white crop top in her costume, it's either matrix by herself or fused with linda danvers. if it's from '05 to '12, it's post-crisis kara. if it's from '12 to around now, it's post-flashpoint kara.

lkasjdf this is such a late reply i'm sorry

that's one i haven't read, though i'm intrigued by it! i'm mostly a new earth gal as well and have only sporadically kept up with comics in......... oh jesus it's been 12 years since the n52 i feel old

omg yes! okay so--her solo book is generally pretty good, though the beginning is rocky so i'd start with issue #23. there's some good stuff before it but it's book-ended by very WTF stuff.

(the main issues i love from before that are 9, 12, and 20. the former two are the more rounded out look at her somewhat bratty "i don't know what to do with my life because i don't feel like a hero" phase immediately post OYL where she's besties with owen mercer.)

a significant chunk of the later issues technically intersect with the new krypton story arc that might be a bit confusing without context? but iirc the bits she mostly shows up for are in action comics and the specific new krypton minis.

superman/supergirl: maelstrom is a fantastic miniseries and it has art by phil noto which is always a plus.

her run with the JLA is a bit of a mess (#45-60) but it's got some cute moments and it leads into reign of doomsday which... i'll be honest i didn't read all of but the end of it has some choice kara moments and superman/batman annual #5 is full of good kara and dick content.

the brave and the bold #4 technically is in the middle of a bigger story but you don't really need to know all of it to appreciate the hilarity that is kara and lobo teaming up

outside new earth!kara, i cannot recommend supergirl: woman of tomorrow enough. it's got gorgeous art and pitch-perfect kara writing.
