May. 12th, 2026 01:15 pmI posted something on my substack after a long while inactive.
Just some musings that have been knocking around in my head lately.

Jan. 20th, 2026 10:28 amChallenge #10: Big Mood (Board).
CHOOSE SOMETHING YOU LOVE AND CREATE A MINI MOOD COLLECTION OF THREE (or more) ITEMS THAT EVOKE YOUR FEELINGS ABOUT IT. You don’t have to limit yourself to visual media, or collect the items into a special format like a square (though you can if you’d like).
I love putting on music to set the mood while I'm writing. Among other things, but I get a bit more involved with Writing Playlists than with Studying Playlists or Workout Playlists (where I often just download a instrumental blues/trap youtube playlists respectively and call it a day LOL). I download my music instead of using spotify or similar services, so I can always drag the few chosen songs I want for a while, switch it up, add and remove songs, have them on repeat if that's what's working at the moment... And I always use instrumental music, because it's great for building an atmosphere without distracting me.
I thought I'd share the songs I've been putting on to write lately! Although other than some outlining/looking over WIPs, these days I've mostly just done a handful of
- Dave Porter - A Carol for Carol. The entirety of Pluribus's soundtrack is in rotation, but this one is my favourite.
- Bear McCreary - Wondrous Love. Black Sails's soundtrack (and Bear McCreary in general) is another recurrent visit around here LOL.
- Antonio Vivaldi - Concerto for violin, strings, and basso continuo in A minor RV356 No. 6 Op.3 "L'estro Armonico."
- Christophe Beck - Close Your Eyes.
- Clint Mansell - Lux Aeterna. Usually I pick songs he did for Black Swan but this one is getting to me more, lately.
- Ara Malikian - Bachelorette (Björk cover).
- Lolita Ritmanis - Catwoman: Chase Me.
- Hans Zimmer & Junkie XL - Beautiful Lie. Another A+ soundtrack IMO.
- Angelo Badalamenti - Laura Palmer's Theme.
- Kerenza Peacock - Dancing Folk: I. First Movement.
- Gwenifer Raymond - Last Night I Heard The Dog Star Bark.
- Bioshock soundtrack - Welcome to Rapture. I can't concentrate enough to play videogames but I sure love their OSTs.
- Jed Kurzel - The Covenant. The Alien prequels' soundtrack also goes in and out a lot lol.

Jan. 23rd, 2025 05:53 pmChallenge #12 Create a Rec Countdown. Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
The post offered a handy list of examples to use, but in the spirit of other rec lists I've made in this journal, I'll post only *one* example of each (and then some).
- ONE book everyone should read: I read Deathless by Catherynne M. Valente last month. The prose and imagery are absolutely enthrancing, and I love the way it grounds the myth in a historical reality. I live for that shit ngl.
- ONE comic everyone should read: Bruce Wayne: Murderer?/Fugitive is THEE arc to get that guy. Really, really good. I want to punch his face in añdslfkjasf.
- ONE song everyone should hear: "In Every Dream Home a Heartache" by Roxy Music.
- ONE movie everyone should watch: last Sunday I finally got around watching Hitchcock's Rope. Quite interesting and layered, as what (tragically) little I've seen of his.
- ONE tv show everyone should watch: Nikita (2009). Do it. I'm doing you a favour rn. That's the best female lead from this century.
- ONE game everyone should play: getting into videogames remains in my to-do list lol, but whenever I'm with my mother, the Rummy comes out.
- ONE fanwork everyone should read: I'm going to recommend A Bat and a Reporter Break Into a Warehouse by HMSLusitania, because it put the idea of a Lois Lane & Tim Drake team-up in my head and that's a WONDERFUL thought to have.
- ONE creator everyone should check out: my dear friend Camilla Andrew. She's an indie author whose books I've talked up here before. At the moment she has published the first two parts of a trilogy (with the third one scheduled for this year) about a delightfully doomed romance in an intricately built secondary fantasy world, a short novella/prequel about a harrowing tale of revenge, and a couple of short stories in magazines (one in that same world). She has beautiful prose and a varied array of superbly written female characters that always get to shine.
- ONE community everyone should join: I'd recommend Get Your Words Out for writers, but it's too late to join in this year (there's always the next one). So I'll tell you guys to come around the Three Sentences Ficathon, where I just posted yet more prompts lol (page 20 :P).
- ONE rec by myself: we've crossed the equator in the Cassandra Cain Week and I've posted four ficlets so far, of 100 (Stephcass), 200 (Barbara & Cass), 300 (Cassbrenda), and 400 words (Cass & Helena) respectively (I'm doing a Thing). Three more left! The ficlets that are left will be about Cass & Jason, Cass & Duke Thomas (as adapted to my new earth headcanons), and... Cass & Shiva. I'll crosspost a masterlist when it's done!
I know "getting invited* to a violin concert in the ruins of a Roman theatre carved in stone because your work friend has someone cancel on her" is a very specific experience that's not going to happen to almost anyone. But if you get the chance: 10/10 would recommend. This makes it 3 out of 4 succeses re: free concerts attended this summer (in order: GR10 cover band - TERRIBLE dj who also turned out to be some asshole I knew from high school xDD - good instrumental cover band with electric cellos).
(*I wanted to pay her for the ticket but apparently she got them for free in the first place)
In other news I'm all caught up with the Sopranos Sunday thing like, three other people are doing on tumblr (today was episode 1x09). It was SUCH a brilliant show. More people should watch it and come talk to me about the Soprano family and all their incredibly fascinating dynamics. Or about literally anything pertaining the show.

Jul. 22nd, 2023 07:25 pmElection day is tomorrow and I'm still in need of distractions everywhere I get them, SO.
-ONE SHORT STORY: "THE SUFFICIENT LOSS PROTOCOL" by Kemi Ashing-Giwa. A little while ago I ended up reading this & the author's other available short stories one day. This one was definitely my favourite. Especially recommended if you dig the premise of the Alien prequels and unlikeable leading women.
-ONE SONG: lately I've been listening to Jazmine Sullivan's "TRAGIC" on a loop. It's a lot of fun LOL.
-ONE FIC: one of the few fics I read to completition last year was "LAMB TO THE SLAUGHTER" by angelfishofthelord, one of my tumblr mutuals. It's a Supernatural fic (I know, I know xD) set on season 14 and going in a different direction with the "John returns" episode. Gen, Castiel & Winchesters, 85k. Perfect for fans of hurt/comfort, whump, and some torture and gore.
-ONE COMIC BOOK: "NIMONA" by Noelle Stevenson. I read it a few weeks ago in anticipation to eventually watching the new film with some friends aaaaaand. In a strange way, it made me not wanna watch the film LOL. I've heard good things of its actual content! I probably will watch it eventually! But man. I do NOT care for the film's art style... the books' was so whimsical and assimetrical and beautiful... and 2D... smh xDD
-ETA: ONE DRAWING: this super cool werewolf-themed drawing I saw on tumblr just now *-*
