Challenge #1 - The Icebreaker Challenge: Introduce yourself. Tell us why you're doing the challenge, and what you hope to gain from it.

I guess I might as well make a new pinned post!

As of now, I'm a 29yo Spaniard, law & politics graduate, and amateur writer. I write both fanfic and original fiction, though the latter is (largely) unavailable to be read rn. I hope to change that in the coming year.

I've done this challenge a few times (one in a past journal). I always think of it as a way to meet new people, and to be more active on dreamwidth, something I more or less managed last year.

I want to keep this intro post short and sweet, so I'll just offer a few links of other places where you can find me.
  • My ao3 account, for any and all my fanfics. I keep it locked and screen comments, but this year I intend to edit some old fics, and I've been thinking about crossposting them over here.
  • My patreon, currently under construction (and likely so for the next couple of months, as I'm going to be pretty busy). At this moment, there's a short story/teaser to my current WIP available for free.
  • My storygraph account, where I post reviews (sometimes just the stars, sometimes something more throughout) of the books and comics I read.
  • My tumblr account, where I am most active.

Another thing about me is that I love owls, so when I saw this banner, I instantly knew it was going to be the only one I'd use for the event LOL. I love its creepy eyes xD

ETA: I'm going to c&p the [community profile] 100femslash  prompt table here, to keep track of my ~progress.

Challenge #12
Make an appreciation post to those who enhance your fandom life. Appreciate them in bullet points, prose, poetry, a moodboard, a song... whatever moves you!

A lot of My Fandom People are disseminated in other sites, most prominently tumblr and discord. Though I do try to get them into dreamwidth, trust me xD. The environment here is one I prefer, frankly: it's slower, and feels calmer, less prone to the kind of drama that plagues those others. In some cases we follow and talk to each other across all platforms, taking advantage of the benefits of each (curse discord as I might in many areas, in terms of direct messages, it's definitely the best one, for example).

I don't think of myself as a gregarious person; I get exhausted quickly by large crowds, especially. In fandom it's much of the same: I feel more comfortable in small fandoms, and whenever I join a larger one, I set to find a small corner of it where I'm in my element.

My preferences often make this easier, because they're rarely in alignment with fandom majorities. Thanks to that I've found My People in numerous corners, from the chill group I gathered while The 100 (a large, wank-prone fandom) was airing, to the buddies I've made in the DC fandom (Even Worse xD), to the ones I met in the tiny environment of writeblr, when I was still around those parts, or that I'm meeting now with Pluribus, for example. My oldest fandom friends, I met in the Shadowhunters fandom, my first active one. A trainwreck, but again, I met a lot of people there that I'm still friends with today :D

In many cases we've followed each other through several fandoms, sometimes meeting, sometimes diverging for a while. Sometimes following each other beyond fandom, taking interests in each other's professional pursuits, in each other's personal lives. Some of the people I've met here know things about me that I wouldn't tell those I personally know off-line, and with their mere presence, support, and engagement, have helped me through Some Shit.

I'll always be glad that I took the leap from lurker to active fandom participant (and creator). I genuinely don't know how I would've stayed sane through my early twenties without the people I met around here. Some of them, I no longer talk with; some just follow me on tumblr and we only sporadically like each other's posts. But others have become lasting friendships that sustain me to this day, And I'm extremely grateful for that!
queenslayerbee: Cass, in her Batgirl suit with her mask off, leans over Barbara, who's sitting in bed. Cass looks at the bat in Barbara's chest, and Cass's shadow takes the shape of Batman in the wall behind her. (barbara and cass (dc comics))

Challenge #11
In your own space, grant someone's wish from Challenge #5. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it and include a link to your own post with the wishes you granted if you feel comfortable doing so.

I had already done this once here, and today I went through a few links and also did it in a few others (x, x, x, x, x). These are all recommendations, things I could fulfill quickly, ranging from music to books to TV shows, one recipe... Maybe there's something in one of them you'll enjoy :D

In my own wish list I asked for collaboration with a new community I created, dcfemslashevents, where I promote and organise events focused on femslash of the DC fandom. And I got that, with several people asking to be members! Now, as an extension of that, I would love if people could participate, or at least spread the word, of the first event: a comment fest where we'll encourage people to leave comments on DC f/f creations of all kinds during Femslash February.

Image of a sky during sunset, in orange tones. It includes the text "dcu femslash february comment fest."

In that list I also talked about femslash ships I would like to see more fanfic of, and I ended up requesting some of them for seasonsofdrabbles (and for the three sentence ficathon), where I specifically asked for stuff from the DCU (with some focus on Wonder Woman/Amazons), Pluribus, Foundation, Black Sails, The 100, Yellowface by R.F. Kuang, The Refrigerator Monologues by Catherynne M. Valente, and Stranger Things. It's a really fun event, and I'd recommend to check up the sign-up and requests summaries to see if there's any fandom/prompt you might want to write a treat for. Mine can be seen here on tumblr :D

queenslayerbee: the white silouettes of three women in a circle on the grass with the sky behind them, with their arms raised to it and their heads thrown back, as if performing a summon. the image blends with black smoke that raises from the ground. (coven (the wicked witches of trickstown))

Challenge #10: Big Mood (Board).
CHOOSE SOMETHING YOU LOVE AND CREATE A MINI MOOD COLLECTION OF THREE (or more) ITEMS THAT EVOKE YOUR FEELINGS ABOUT IT. You don’t have to limit yourself to visual media, or collect the items into a special format like a square (though you can if you’d like).

I love putting on music to set the mood while I'm writing. Among other things, but I get a bit more involved with Writing Playlists than with Studying Playlists or Workout Playlists (where I often just download a instrumental blues/trap youtube playlists respectively and call it a day LOL). I download my music instead of using spotify or similar services, so I can always drag the few chosen songs I want for a while, switch it up, add and remove songs, have them on repeat if that's what's working at the moment... And I always use instrumental music, because it's great for building an atmosphere without distracting me.

I thought I'd share the songs I've been putting on to write lately! Although other than some outlining/looking over WIPs, these days I've mostly just done a handful of [community profile] threesentenceficathon prompts lol (you can see them here, alongside my own prompts in the first post of the event. #selfpromo).
I would love to hear your favourite instrumental songs, albums, film or videogame soundtracks... More to add to the list :P

queenslayerbee: Isabelle Adjany as Lucy Harker in 1979's "Nosferatu the Vampire". She's surrounded by darkness, looking over her shoulder while she wears a white nightgown and a cross as a necklace. A hand with long nails like a claw is reaching for her neck from the darkness behind her. (Default)
The [community profile] threesentenceficathon is live and already has over 40 pages of prompts, bless xD. I wrote a few!

-Pluribus, Carol/The Hivemind, "communion" (any, any F/F, i want to fucking tear you apart). dreamwidth link + ao3 link

-DC comics, Diana/Donna, "replica"
(Any, Any F/F selfcest, i just touch myself and say / "i'll make my own damn way."), dreamwidth link + ao3 link.

-Stranger Things, Holly & Nancy + Holly & Henry, "her arms, a fortress"
(Stranger Things, Holly & Nancy Wheeler, nightmares). dreamwidth link + ao3 link.

-Severance, Helena & Helly & Jame Eagan, "clean hands"
(any, any female character, every woman is allowed to commit patricide). dreamwidth link + ao3 link.

-The Locked Tomb, Nona & Camilla, "mimicry" (The Locked Tomb, Nona, Like Humans Do). dreamwidth link + ao3 link.

I also prompted quite a few things:
Edited with one last fill + 3 more prompts, as the first post of the ficathon just closed.
queenslayerbee: Lisa simpson dressed in a multicoloured baggy shirt, with a sideways cap and sunglasses, and a disaffected look on her face. (lisa simpson (the simpsons))

Challenge #9.
Talk about your favorite tropes in media or transformative works. (Feel free to substitute in theme/motif/cliche if "trope" doesn't resonate with you.)

I'm one of those people whose mind goes momentarily blank when asked "what are your favourite X?", so normally it'd take me a little while to think of this LOL. Luckily, because I signed up for a few challenges this year (most recently [community profile] seasonsofdrabbles , still open for sign-ups for one more day), I had a list of tropes ready to be copypasted and, why not, expanded upon!

-Amnesia
. I am a sucker for a good memory loss plot. Especially when you add angst and manipulation to it. I.e. what if someone did it purposefully? What if someone takes advantage of a character's lack of recalling of XYZ event that would've otherwise make them less trusting? And so on. I have a WIP in the works (so like, maybe for 2028 lol) that centers around such a premise, specifically in the DC fandom, with Jason and the bats. It starts with a Jason who, after being on the wrong end of a psychic attack, had Bruce heal his mind... and take some creative licenses while he was at it. Shortly after I first started developing the idea, Gotham War came out. My story would work very differently, but for a moment there, the coincidence was hilarious.

-Time travel/loopEspecially when it doesn't fix anything, when it offers you a view of a past you can't fix, or that you can't keep. Unsurprisingly I do have some ideas involving that trope in DC, most notably one inspired by a post about Damian traveling in time and meeting a younger, carefree Talia (the time travel would be part of a larger story where I would reimagine and rework a lot of what canon does with the al Ghuls and that I don't care much for, but still).

And, well, time loops just have GREAT potential for character exploration. You can really get deep inside a character's fears with one!

-Exploration of canon historical settings, lore, worldbuilding, etc. I love it when fics explore what real events in a particular era would've been like in canon, when they get deep into the intricacies of the setting's world, etc. It really enriches the experience, and I hope my future fics can do that, at some point.

-Canon divergence. In general, I love reading and writing stories that explore "what if" scenarios, sticking close to canon up to that point so that we get to see what would diverge... and what wouldn't. When those steps are done with care and forethought, it can be incredible.

-Adapting to disability. I joke about how I love hitting characters with the stick of disability, and I do LOL. I have WIPs in the works (also, again, mostly with DC xD) where I blind characters, paralyze them, cut off their limbs, give them chronic illnesses, terminal illnesses... Or explores the ones canon gave them, too. I love stories that are... less about whump (though that too, sometimes; it's just that I feel it's not a balanced phenomenon, tbh), and more about how the character deals (or doesn't deal) with the changes

-Angst. I'm here to suffer. I want to read stories that leave me melancholic, despondent, shaking, crying. There's nothing like a well-written bittersweet or tragic ending.

-Unusual forms of fics (epistolary, outsider POV, interactive, etc.). It's incredibly fun what people can do with it! I still think about the minesweeper Murderbot fic...

-Adventures, heists, escapes, etc. It's just FUN. And it's plot. I love a navel-gazing character study as much as the next gal but sometimes I want to read and write A Story Featuring My Blorbos.

-Lovers to enemies. Incredibly underrated trope because nothing hits like this, IMO. Again, I obviously like to get my heart broken by fiction xD

-Betrayal. Another angsty trope that hits just right. I love especially to see the aftermath of it: how do the characters move forward? Can they move forward? Should they move forward? It's easy to see why Black Sails is one of my favourite shows lol; I've never seen it used so extensively and yet so differently and so well every. single. time. And I don't watch Doctor Who (I've tried, multiple times, it just doesn't stick), but every once in a while I think about this scene between Twelfth and Clara I've only seen out of context (used masterfully in a Silverflint gifset here btw).

-Mourning. Loss is a terrible and I want more stories that deal with the full scope of it, that truly make you feel itPluribus has certainly done it well, in depth, and in all manner of ways, and it's one of the reasons the show stole my heart as quickly as it did.

-Mind control. And specifically characters fighting it, navigating it, having to deal with the consequences of it. In general, stories about compromised agency and how the characters deal with it are my favourite thing in the world.

-Abuse aftermath. The above relates to this: characters with compromised, diminished, and stolen agency and how they fight, fawn, confront, deny, heal, stunt... all of that is catnip to me.

-Role reversal. A particular form of "what if" that can be fascinating if done right! If everything was the same except with this two characters swapping places... what would happen? What would change? What wouldn't? I don't have plans to write it, but I have thought about a role reversal AU for Jason Todd and Mia Dearden (Jason becomes the second Speedy; Mia becomes the second Robin) a lot, ever since a mutual talked to me about his (as yet unrealised, sadly) version of the idea. Even explored it a little bit here.

I could continue, but I feel that the list is more than long enough :P

queenslayerbee: Isabelle Adjany as Lucy Harker in 1979's "Nosferatu the Vampire". She's surrounded by darkness, looking over her shoulder while she wears a white nightgown and a cross as a necklace. A hand with long nails like a claw is reaching for her neck from the darkness behind her. (Default)

Challenge #7.
LIST THREE (or more) THINGS YOU LIKE ABOUT YOURSELF. They don’t have to be your favorite things, just things that you think are good. Feel free to expand as much or as little as you want.

  • I am good at improvising, at coming up with solutions and at dealing with sudden unexpected turns.
  • I value the fact that I'm honest and straightforward with people, and I value when others are the same way. I rather someone deal with the awkwardness of telling me an uncomfortable truth than try to appease me or protect my ego, and I try to be as honest (yet never cruel) with both others and myself. Sometimes it's not worth it and you might wash your hands off it, sure, but if you want to maintain a relationship, in any form, with a person in the long-term, it's necessary.
  • I have a good ear for music.
  • I am a creative, imaginative and competitive writer, and while I think there are many aspects of writing where I definitely have room for improvement, I'm willing to put in the work and confident in my ability to get better.
  • I'm really fucking funny, if I can say so myself.
  • I have a good memory and I write a really good essay. This, along #1, greatly helped in university LOL.

Challenge #8.
Talk about your creative process.

This is something I've tried to fight, but it's high time I came to terms with the fact that I'm not a long-term planner LOL. Not an outline writer, at all, in either fiction or non-fiction (essays, as I said). There's a reason why I love writing drabbles[1] and short-form in general: I'm great at those burst of creativity, getting the story out in one sitting, and then going through it and refining it, changing it if needed, until it's exactly in the shape I want it to be.

Of course, this is a bit more challenging with long-form stories, of which I have many in my folders. I'm still learning, through trial and error, what works for me and what doesn't on that front. But trying to overplan and decide on things ahead to stick closely to a plan was never it. I need that room for sudden, in-the-moment inspiration to take me away and see where it leads. Only when a draft is complete through this method, instead of getting caught up in it or trying to stick to a schedule, can I then approach it as my harshest, first alpha reader LOL. Seeing it as a whole, kill my darlings when needed, tightened the loose threads, tweak and reinforce what works.

[1]Speaking of! Sign-ups for Season of Drabbles (and nominations for the tag set) are open until this Sunday. Be sure to check it out, if you're interested!

Also, fandomtrees is almost ready, with (at the time I write this, it's changing quickly) only three gifts left to complete it before reveals (tomorrow, if that goes well). Take a look, and see if they might be of a fandom you're in!.
queenslayerbee: peitho and astrea by thegodfather. one girl with eyes closed, illuminated by sunshine, wearing a sunray gold crown. another woman, obscured by shadows, behind her surrounding her neck with one hand and lightly touching her chest with another, with bright red nails. (trapped (house of providence))

Challenge #3
Write a love letter to fandom. It might be to fandom in general, to a particular fandom, favourite character, anything at all.

There is a lot of things about fandom that deserve praise, as much as it can get frustrating sometimes. For this particular post, though, I want to give a bit of a shout-out to a small, often overlooked part of fandom: the femslash corners of it <3

In some particular fandoms those corners are pretty huge and active, which is delightful to see, but in general f/f has a smaller presence than other categories. However, the creativity that buzzes in said corners is always beautiful to see. The people who feel passion for it are truly dedicated and put their all into their creations.

I love writing it myself. I'm looking forward to the next instances of the [community profile] threesentenceficathon or [community profile] seasonsofdrabbles for that very purpose, because I know those kinds of events are great sources of inspiration for myself (and hey, maybe if I'm lucky, I'll receive some small f/f gifts myself :P). I'm also going to keep an eye on [community profile] 100femslash and see if I can complete the challenge myself.

And... I was simply going to mention my plans, but I went ahead and dived into the deep end of the pool and created [community profile] dcfemslashevents , exactly what it says on the tina community to host and organise (and boost) femslash events for DC characters! As the sticky post says, there are some plans for this year underway, and I'll likely talk more about it during the Snowflake Challenge, if I get the chance.

Challenge #5
In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, a wishlist of sorts.

Let's keep it to the theme!
  • Give me your best femslash recs! In fic or any other form. Those that you think are truly good, that stayed with you, that you want everyone else to experience.
  • Tell me about your favourite femslash ships, the first ones you liked, the F/F books, shows, films etc. you're obsessed with, the ones you write about yourself... Anything femslash!
  • I would welcome someone who'd want to help with the DC Femslash Events community, but no pressure :P
Challenge #6
Top 10 Challenge.

For this, I'll post 10(ish) femslash ships I wish to see more of, in general.
  • Maxanor, aka Eleanor Guthrie and Max, from Black Sails. Do not get me wrong: I love Maxanne, the clear fandom favourite, but I'm hungry for more Maxanor. Fics exploring their doomed romance, what-if scenarios, things about how they begun... anything!
  • Rosewaves, aka Rosita Bustillos and Waverly Earp, from Wynonna Earp. Oh, that ship absolutely ensnared me way back when! I'd love to see more creations focused on it (and only it, because the canon f/f ship was just... fine, to me LOL).
  • I made that community for a reason, so, yeah, more DC rareships. I'm particularly charmed by the idea of Cass Cain/Kate Kane, though I know it's difficult for it to match what I want for the ship LOL :P. Same for Stephanie Brown/Selina Kyle, another ship I feel has a lot of potential.
  • The Buffyverse fandom definitely has a lot of femslash going around! But I would really appreciate more of it including Kendra Young. Buffy/Kendra or Faith/Kendra, of course, but also Willow/Kendra... and some fucked up Drusilla/Kendra, especially in AUs where she turned her.
  • The 100 is another fandom where I'd love to see some rareships that get less attention, and I will continue to prompt them LOL. Octavia/Diyoza, Echo/Clarke, Clarke/Josephine (those are the only two Clarke ships I like LOL), Echo/Gaia, Raven/Indra...
  • Last year I reread Emma, by Jane Austen, and well. I will always root for Emma/Jane Fairfax, in my heart :P
  • Legacies also had some great ships, and Hizzie reigns in my heart, but Lizzie/Aurora, Lizzie/Ablah, Lizzie/Jen, Lizzie/Alyssa... all ships I'd love to see more of.
  • More femslash in Reign, my old beloved fandom. Especially among/featuring the ladies in waiting: Greer, Lola, Kenna. Either between them, or with other characters.
  • Femslash fic in Foundation! I know they're bio mother and daughter, but welp, Gaal and Salvor technically share a kiss on screen and their dynamic is unusual, to say the least. We all know if these were two white men it would've sparked a juggernaut ship lol. And the female characters in this show are all fascinating, I'd love to read more about them, for the fandom to have more fics!
  • June and Athena's dynamic was the most fascinating part of R.F. Kuang's Yellowface, and I'd love to see a bit more of it.

I'd like to put my money where my mouth is and post (some more, in a few cases) fics for at least some of these ships on 2026!

Aaaaand that's all. I'm all caught up now :P
queenslayerbee: Lisa simpson dressed in a multicoloured baggy shirt, with a sideways cap and sunglasses, and a disaffected look on her face. (lisa simpson (the simpsons))

I haven't had a lot of time for the Snowflake Challenge (or little else) since the year begun, but I wanted to dedicate a moment to it this weekend, at least. Skipping over #3 for now...

Challenge #2: Pets of Fandom.
Loosely defined! Post about your pets, pets from your canon, anything you want!

I've had too many pets growing up to post them here without forgetting some, likely. Mainly dogs, and ferrets, but also birds, wild rabbits rescued and released back, cats we took care of due to various circumstances but couldn't keep because my father is allergic... Some wounded birds we also kept until they healed. A few days ago while I was at my parents' I thought I might end up adding another one to the list LOL, but after a couple hours the little thing managed to fly again (it had crashed against my window LOL).

Dogs have always been my favourite pet to have thoughThe fun you can have with them is unparalleled. And my two favourite fictional pets are dogs, as well: Ace in Batman Beyond, and Bear in Person of Interest. And I suppose they have quite a bit in common: older dogs with a harsh past taken in by a gruff man LOL. If you haven't watched it, I especially recommend the episode "Ace in the Hole" from Batman Beyond, if you want to get some of those Dog Film Feelings in under 30 minutes.

Challenge #4: Rec The Contents Of Your Last Page
Any website that you like, be it fanfiction, art, social media, or something a bit more eccentric!

I am going to be lazy, and link back to all I recommended for rec-cember last month :P

I posted four master lists (+ a bonus mini-list on the last day of December). Each included fanfiction, fanart, and meta analysis, with one fandom being the focus but with plenty of random recs of each category for other fandoms. I truly recommend checking them out!
  • Recs for The Murderbot Diaries. The bonus include a Barbie/Dracula crossover you won't regret taking a look at. Crack taken seriously at its finest.
  • Recs for The Locked Tomb. Speaking as someone who's really not into modern AUs, please do check out the abortion story.
  • Recs for Black Sails. It was great to have an excuse revisit this fandom and catch up on my to-read list for it :P. Make sure to check the fanart!
  • Recs for the DCU. It's a huge fandom, which means so times you have to really dig to find some gems, so I saved you the trouble :P. The extras include one of my favourite fics read last year, a sickening post-Endgame one-shot focused on Steve and Peggy.
The last mini-list was basically focused on fanvids (half of them from Black Sails), with a few extra recs (one Murderbot fanart, a couple Yuletide fics from Carmilla and Hitchcock's Rope) that didn't make it to the other lists due to timing.

I think between the fic/art/meta etc. and the variety of fandoms there'll be something for everyone in them.
queenslayerbee: Isabelle Adjany as Lucy Harker in 1979's "Nosferatu the Vampire". She's surrounded by darkness, looking over her shoulder while she wears a white nightgown and a cross as a necklace. A hand with long nails like a claw is reaching for her neck from the darkness behind her. (Default)
1. Your main fandom of the year?
Detective Comics Comics remains king.

2. Your favorite film you watched this year?
Sinners, and it's not even remotely close. I have seen other films I've liked this year (Rope, La virgen roja, May December, Farewell My Concubine, American Fiction), but Sinners truly made me fall in love with every aspect of it.

3. Your favorite book read this year?
Harrow the Ninth, in terms of novels. City of Corpses for non-fiction. And Wonder Woman: Historia for comic books.

4. Your favorite album or song to listen to this year?
Rosalía's LUX. Another not-at-all-close case, even if I've listened and liked many other albums this year. Honourable mention to Miley Cyrus's "Something Beautiful," I really loved it.

5. Your favorite TV show of the year?
Pluribus, no contest <- saaaaaaame. Foundation will probably be a close second, but I just finished season 1. And Twin Peaks might win, if I had actually finished it lol. 2026 task.

6. Your favorite podcast of the year?
innerFrench. Highly recommend it if you want to get started on learning/improving the language.

7. Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
Calling it a discovery is a bit exaggerated, but it's the first time I participate in Yuletide and I'm SO impressed by that event, its organisation, etc. I wish I'd had time and especially energy to write more than one gift. Definitely a 2026 task lol.

8. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
The shit that went down with Gretchen Felker-Martin's Red Hood run. Especially how some fellow fans reacted. Vile.

9. Your fandom boyfriend of the year?
Jason Todd remains my top guy for the third year in a row LOL. Shout-out to A-Train from The Boys, because I was pleasantly impressed by his storyline. And Manousos, obviously.

9. Your fandom girlfriend of the year?
Carol Sturka my FUCKING beloved. And shout-out to Demerzel (Foundation) and Sofia Falcone in The Penguin. I have yet to finish that one too, but you guys don't know what I would do to for that woman...

11. Your biggest squee moment of the year?
The Pluribus season finale. I was GIDDY with joy during Carol and Manousos's interactions and I am incredibly excited to see more of them. So much that even missing the show, I'm not mad about having to wait. It'll happen when it happens.

12. The most missed of your old fandoms?
I'm flirting with Black Sails again lately...

13.Your biggest fan anticipations for the coming year?
What if I said Yuletide LOL. Well, that too, but I've been thinking a lot about organising some time of smut event (likely a ficathon or a gift box) for rare femslash ships in the DC fandom, maybe during the summer. I'll have to see if people are interested, but even if it's only a few handfuls, I'll be willing to put the work for it.
And the three-sentence ficathon, of course!
queenslayerbee: Isabelle Adjany as Lucy Harker in 1979's "Nosferatu the Vampire". She's surrounded by darkness, looking over her shoulder while she wears a white nightgown and a cross as a necklace. A hand with long nails like a claw is reaching for her neck from the darkness behind her. (Default)

I've loved many fanvids, and unfortunately saved very few of them :/. But I encountered a few when I was going through my Black Sails tag to hunt for recommendations, and I decided to share those, and a few others, to close rec-cember.

Black Sails

Others

ALSO I discovered this too late to recommend it in the Murderbot Diaries's post, but: here's some (way too sexy) Murderbot art 😔

And at last, a couple of Yuletide recommendations!

  • Knife, a Rope (1948) fic. 4.9k, M. It shows a bit of how Brandon and Phillip came to be... whatever they are in the film, to each other. Superb characterisation.
  • night-trap, a Carmilla (novella) fic. 7.6k, M. Years after the novella, the two women meet again. GREAT "becoming the monster" take, with very vivid prose.

There are some giftboxes that need to be filled over fandom trees, including my own! So take a look at the spreadsheet and see if there's any prompt that catches your eye :P

I got this week's rec list ready early, to my surprise! So here it is

DCU

FANFIC

  • Two Minutes by Aingeal98. 1.9k, T. Cass does something terrible for Steph. Heartbreaking and perfectly in character.
  • mindscape by torigates. 2k, T. This one is set in the Young Justice cartoon, instead of the comics, like the rest. It's immediately set post-Failsafe (thee episode from season 1), and focuses on Supermartian. I read it way back when, as a lurker, and on reread it got me all nostalgic.
  • Aftermathmares by Mist-managed (Greyspaces13). 3k, T. Mia's survivor's guilt after Lian's death in Cry For Justice. I liked seeing a fic that sits with this moment in time for the Arrowfam (mainly Mia and Oliver only, here). It's difficult, and it certainly wasn't well-written in canon, but I do think there could be a lot to explore with it.
  • In Which Jason Goes to a Convention by TeleportingAspen. 3.3k, T. What if Jade Nguyen was Jason's poison trainer? The fic expands across Lost Days and post-UTRH, and it's a satisfying portrayal of his character during the time.
  • Oracle, Re: Birth by KamalasFanfiction. 8.1k, T. This fic mixes preboot and reboot canon in a very interesting way: what if the Batgirl of Burnside was an impostor, and oracle!Barbara had to deal with that? If you're like me and still kind of bitter about the reboot, and especially on what it did to her character, go ahead and read this.
  • Left Behind, Or Forgotten by cleromancy. 30.8k, T. This one is marked incomplete, but it ends at a good, narratively satisfying point so don't let that deter you. Features the bat clan a few years down the line (pre-reboot continuity, of course), with their complex dynamics, The Bruce Problem... it has background Jaytim and Dickroy, too, and a lot of humour mixed with The Horrors. I'd also recommend reading the three vignettes preceding it in the series, but I personally read them after reading the longer, more plot-relevant LBOF, and I think it's preferable that way.

I hope you'll enjoy some of these!

I might appear again on the 31st with a surprise...

queenslayerbee: Lisa simpson dressed in a multicoloured baggy shirt, with a sideways cap and sunglasses, and a disaffected look on her face. (lisa simpson (the simpsons))

It's a Supernatural fic where I eventually added a second chapter in reply to a prompt here on tumblr ("rewrite something in a different character's POV"; the first chapter was from Sam's POV, the second from Castiel's) and the people making the podcast did something creative with it, first doing the fic as it is and then combining both chapters into a third one.

That event is still open to leave gifts, as are sapphic stocking stuffers and fandomtrees. Feel free to peruse other people comments (in the first case) and tags (in the second) to see if you want to leave someone a present!

Unofficial Pirate Day!

Headsup: some of these fics might require an ao3 account to be read.

BLACK SAILS

FANFIC

  • A Death Full of Light to Consume Me by angryhausfrau. 1k, E. Maxanne, post-canon. A lovely fic written for a prompt of mine: "I have lost myself in the sea many times with my ear full of freshly cut flowers, with my tongue full of love and agony."
  • The Power of a Story by medusine. 3.2k, E. Have you ever wanted to read a hilarious yet poignant and metatextually relevant story where Flint tells a dirty story to his crew? Well, here it is. Implied Flint/Miranda and explicit Flint/Silver.
  • el cuentacuento by straddling_the_atmosphere. 4.6k, not rated. This one seems pretty popular already, but I'll still recommend it because it's a very interesting view at Silver's past and how he uses narrative and stories to obscure it, insinuate about it, obfuscate it, etc.
  • A Long Dark Throat by greenforsnow. 4.9, E. Silvermadi with... a very complex Silverfilntmadi situation. Silver and Madi, fantasizing about Flint together, all paired with Silver's... personality. Some of the best, most harrowing smut I've read, as well as a perfect Silver voice.
  • i'm a black ocean leaping and wide by loosedindecember. 6k, M. Post-series, Madi-centric (includes both Madi/Eme and Madi/Silver, but it's mainly about her). An interesting, and idealistic view at the possibilities after canon.
  • No Monuments by ballantine. 11.1k, not rated. Solaris AU, Silverflint. GREAT fic, one of those perfect examples of what an AU should be. I love the way each character has been "translated" into this setting, Max and Silver especially.

queenslayerbee: peitho and astrea by thegodfather. one girl with eyes closed, illuminated by sunshine, wearing a sunray gold crown. another woman, obscured by shadows, behind her surrounding her neck with one hand and lightly touching her chest with another, with bright red nails. Today, is Ninth House time.

THE LOCKED TOMB

FANFIC

  • varsouviana by cristabeloct. 1.6k, T. A short, pre-lyctorhood Cytherea/Loveday fic. Mandatory if you want to read some REALLY good pining.
  • and they were roommates by HerenorThereNearnorFar. 2.7k, T. Pre-Apocalypse (I) Mercymorn/Cristabel that does a great job of exploring who their characters could've been. I love Mercy's righteous fury, in particular.
  • settle up in heaven by liesmyth. 3k, T. Some Kiriona/Harrow corpse action. A+ stuff.
  • Incident Report by notheragain. 4.5, E. Pre-series Corona/Judith. It's described as "Judith files an official report to admit to Cohort Intelligence that she, despite all her best efforts, got laid." and it is exactly what that should be.
  • we're kings among runaways (on the bus mall) by NotAFicWriter. 11.2k, T. Also known as the Abortion Fic (there should be more abortion fics!!). I'm not usually into modern AUs, but every once in a while there are some that are undeniably absolute gems. Gideon's voice in particular is perfect here.
  • as long as it is day by liesmyth. 18.3k, T. Time-loop fic!! Set right near the end of HtN!!! With a great Gideon and great Gideon-John and Gideon-Wake scenes!!! The WORST family reunion ever, indeed. And an incredible read.

  • The Blues Run the Game by coyotesuspect. 7,4k, M. Post-canon Hustlers fic that dives into what the immediate aftermath of the article could've been like for Destiny. And gives some much needed joy to her and Ramona.

Recs every day for this event would've been a little too much for me, so instead, I decided to put together a bit of a larger list, mixing some of the most prevalent fandoms I'm currently into + some miscellaneous recs for everyone ^-^

  • la petite mort by howlingmoonrise (TheDarkStoryteller). 3.8k, T. This is a Barbie/Dracula crossover (and a Barbie/Dracula romance) and I urge you to read it. AMAZING fic, I swear.
  • Nomon by interlude. 6.4, T. Fic set in the time jump between season 4 and season 5 of The 100, focused on Bellamy/Echo and the Space Kru. The premise is basically, what if Echo got pregnant? I'm not one for pregnancy stories unless they fit specific criteria, but this one definitely passes the test.
  • Lamb to the Slaughter by angelfishofthelord. 85k, G (... I would not agree with this rating LOL). If you like whump, this fic has it in spades. It's a Supernatural what-if of that episode in s14 where John appears, Because. What if instead of Castiel losing his memories, the Winchesters did? And they encountered a strange creature in their bunker that they do not remember... Featuring Castiel being put through the ringer + a badass Mary Winchester.

Fandomtrees sign ups close in a couple days as well, so if you haven't submitted yours yet, this is a reminder.

The goal is to enjoy yourself and talk about Mia.
  • The only caveat: NO AI-created works.
  • For obvious reasons, this (Jaymia) blog won't reblog creations of a shippy nature that don't involve Jaymia, but we encourage you to post anything Mia-related, regardless, for us all to enjoy.
  • Tag your posts with #aSpeedySolstice or drop a mention to @dearhoodharbor if you want us to see them and reblog them.
  • There are no limits to the kind of topics or ratings that can be featured in this works. It's left to the creator's discretion whether they warn for any specifics, but we ask that they be clear about the ratings.

Be polite and respectful to your fellow fans, don't start shit, and don't let drama started by others distract you from the goal: Mia-posting.

queenslayerbee: Isabelle Adjany as Lucy Harker in 1979's "Nosferatu the Vampire". She's surrounded by darkness, looking over her shoulder while she wears a white nightgown and a cross as a necklace. A hand with long nails like a claw is reaching for her neck from the darkness behind her. (lucy harker (nosferatu the vampire))

This is something I've talked about before (mainly in DMs), and it's probably something that'd only have crossover appeal to a handful of people (and at least one that might hate it to pieces xD). But I often think about writing the equivalent to Steferine's plot in season 5 of The Vampire Diaries for Dick and Catalina Flores. Some tags left on a recent post of mine prompted me to want to talk a bit about it here.

The explanation: Katherine and Stefan met over a century ago; Stefan was initially attracted and drawn to her, but she used compulsion (mind control) during their "relationship", to keep him docile and accepting of the fact that she was... well, a murderous monster. She fed on him, violated him, raped him.

The important part: season 5, over 150+ years later. Katherine has been stripped of her powers, turned human, and had what amounted to a terminal illness (her 500+ years were catching up to her). Stefan, who at the time had been feeling vulnerable and sought to grasp for control, ended up choosing to have a one night stand with Katherine. She took this as ~reconnecting, as another step in their grandiose love story. To him, this was closure.

Later, she's on her (supposed) deathbed and Stefan extends her some grace, using his own vampiric powers in order to offer her some closure in (what he thinks are) her last moments, conjuring images of a happier version of her human youth: with the newborn daughter that was taken from her for having a baby out of wedlock and the family that was brutally slaughtered when Katherine refused to be a sacrificial pawn in someone else's schemes.

This is not really the end of Katherine this season, because instead of going quietly in that good night (as if), she hijacks the body of her doppelganger (a younger vampire with her own romantic past with Stefan) and tries to ~seduce him back. She's found out, and Stefan gets to be the one to deliver the killing blow.

(She returns as the final boss in the very last season, and he stabs her + sacrifices himself in the process in order to save the world. They die together in a literal fiery embrace -one of his past victims summons hellfire, it's a long story-; this is not relevant to the point of this post, I just like it, for Reasons).

I don't know yet what the equivalent of this story would be for Dick and Catalina. The killing is (most likely) out, for obvious reasons; Dick wouldn't find closure in that, or in Catalina dying in an unrelated or different manner (and I don't want to kill her). Neither of them have vampiric power nor do I want to give it to them LOL (here we could draw some parallels between vampirism/vigilantism, though each of their relationships with it is basically inverted from Steferine's).

But I would want that same feeling of... Catalina being in a vulnerable, "lower" place than she once was [1], and this allowing Dick to approach her from a moral high ground, where he can... idk how to explain this. Afford? Being ~heroic and generous towards her in a way that makes him feel soooo good about himself, as opposed to how miserable he felt when he was actually with her in Devin Grayson's run, when he felt "stuck" with her and tried to find something sympathetic in her and clearly loathed every second together and used it as self-punishment. And then yeah, the part where Catalina manages to turn the tables on him, and he now must be proactive to stop her. We'll see.

[1] As I typed that I just had a great idea of how to do this 😈. This is why I love blabbing on tumblr dot com, thank you everyone.
